Established in 1956 as the Woodrow Dolls, the Woodrow Wilson High School Sweethearts Drill Team is an East Dallas mainstay. You can find the Sweethearts all over town, from volunteering at local elementary schools, representing Woodrow at Lakewood events, marching in local parades, performing at holiday shows, and doing their famous kick routine at halftime to Western Trail, performed by our own Wildcat Band.

Being a Sweetheart isn’t easy, but it’s worth it!  Every spring semester the Sweethearts host several days of dance clinics, where new hopefuls will learn various kick and jazz choreography. After the clinics, auditions will be held, and a panel of judges will select the next season’s team of the often-imitated, but never duplicated Sweethearts!  There are high expectations of team members, who must maintain passing grades, and conduct themselves like a Sweetheart, both on and off the field.

In addition to annual team auditions, the Sweethearts hold auditions for every performance, to maintain their high standards of precision and technique.  The performance auditions are often judged by the team’s Military Officers, who choreograph and teach much of the season’s routines.  The Military Officers are the Captain, First Lieutenant, and five supporting Lieutenants.  Directly under the Military Officers are the Social Officers!  The Social Officers are the President, Vice President, and five supporting Social Officers.  Socials are responsible for all of the team’s events, social media, squad and camp activities, and all print media/bulletin boards. Both Military and Social Officer Lines have secondary auditions before being selected for their leadership positions.

All line members, including both officer lines, are expected to purchase all necessary supplies and uniform components, attend all practices and events, participate in all Sweethearts student-run fundraisers, and be enrolled in the PE Substitute Drill Team class.  The Drill Team class is usually also taught by the team’s sponsor(s)/director(s).

The entire Dance Department, which includes the Sweethearts Drill Team, has its own parent-run Booster Club.  The Booster Club supports the Dance Department by holding its own fundraisers, hosting and participating in school-sponsored events, providing lower-cost options for game day meals for the Sweethearts, providing the Senior Posters for football games, designing the Sweethearts page in the football program, gathering parent volunteers to chaperone and run events, sending out weekly communication to the team families, updating the Dance website, and staying in communication with the team’s director(s) and student leaders to provide additional support.
